Multisensory Structured Language Strategies in the General Education Classroom

Texas Education Code §38.003 states that “each school district shall provide for the treatment of any student determined to have dyslexia or a related disorder.” What is meant by “treatment”? This session will review the components and delivery of instruction from State guidance, provide an overview of multisensory, structured language intervention (MSL), and discuss ways to support students with dyslexia in the general education classroom based on the strategies of MSL.

The act of reading comprehension requires the coordination of complex processes ensure accurate information is extracted from the text in an effective and efficient manner. This session will walk participants through a few evidence-based, multiple component comprehension strategies and how they might be applied to enhance comprehension instruction.

Struggling Readers: Leveraging Language and Literacy for Liberation

This session will focus on reading and writing routines designed to engage adolescent students in meaningful literacy routines. Participants will gain a shared understanding and examine best practices around structured reading and writing routines that grow students’ identity as proficient readers and writers through an immersive literacy experience.

Building Inferential Comprehension Skills with INFER

Day 2, Session 2 - June 1, 1:05 - 2:05pm

Students who struggle with generating inferences are disadvantaged in school, as all texts require some level for inferencing (i.e., reading in between the lines). This session will focus on the use of an evidence-based strategy that supports readers ability to recognize when and how to read between the lines.
