Prior Knowledge that Sticks: Design Schema-Building Activities to Enhance Student Learning
Day 1, Session 1 - May 31, 10:50 - 11:50am
Activating prior knowledge at the start of a lesson can be a powerful strategy to support students’ learning of new material. When teachers focus students’ attention on relevant prior knowledge and explicitly connect it to new ideas, students are more likely to remember the new information. This session will provide examples of different ways teachers can intentionally enhance their schema-building activities to help students carefully consider relevant vocabulary, concepts, or skills needed for the lesson. Join us as move beyond questions such as “What do you know about this topic?” and “What did we learn last class?”
