As classrooms prepare to welcome children back from summer break, education is at the forefront of all our minds. The 74 recently spoke to Jan Lacina, Bezos Family Foundation Endowed Chair in Early Childhood Education, about the benefits of diverse children’s literature in education.
“We need leaders in education to have policies and procedures, which many school districts do,” she said. “However, what’s interesting is that the American Library Association tracks censorship, and this is not surprising at all, but who is censoring books? It’s not necessarily parents at all; 92% of all books that are challenged were initiated by pressure groups, government officials and decision makers.”
