The College of Education at Texas Christian University welcomes renowned scholar, author and pioneering academic leader Ruth J. Simmons, Ph.D. as keynote speaker for “The Future of Education” on Oct. 24.

TCU President Daniel W. Pullin will join Simmons for the 100th anniversary celebration of the College of Education at TCU.

“As we celebrate the College of Education's Centennial, we are privileged to host Dr. Simmons, whose distinguished career has had an immeasurable impact on higher education,” said Frank Hernandez, dean of the College of Education at TCU. “Her leadership, advocacy and commitment to advancing educational opportunity will inspire our community as we look to the future.”

Simmons, president emerita of Prairie View A&M University, Brown University and Smith College, will draw on more than 50 years of experience as a scholar and change-maker in higher education. Known for her leadership in advancing equity and inclusion, Simmons will discuss the role of education in fostering socioeconomic mobility, cultural belonging and social change.

The daughter of sharecroppers, Simmons grew up in segregated Texas and became the first African American president of an Ivy League institution, setting the stage for a groundbreaking career in higher education leadership.

Simmons’ remarkable journey from growing up in segregated Texas to becoming a prominent voice in higher education is detailed in her upcoming memoir, Up Home: A Young Girl’s Journey.

Simmons will share reflections on key moments that shaped her life and leadership philosophy, her views on the future of higher education and thoughts on the critical role colleges of education play in preparing educators to meet societal challenges.

Attendees will hear insights on how institutions can remain adaptable while staying true to their mission and how colleges of education can strengthen community partnerships to foster educational innovation.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Early registration is encouraged due to limited capacity.
