charlotte woodfordFor Charlotte Woodford ‘26, writing has always been a way to connect with others. The TCU early childhood education major recently published How I Know He’s Real, a children’s book that shares her faith journey through the eyes of a young girl named Lilly Greene. The book is now available at the TCU Campus Store and bookstores near you.

A Calling to Write
Woodford’s inspiration for the book stems from her love of children’s literature and her faith. She credits TCU’s children’s literature course as the spark that deepened her passion for storytelling.

“I’ve always loved children’s literature. It’s warm and comforting—a place for children to turn to,” Woodford said. “In the fall of 2023, I meditated on what God has done in my life, and the draw to write a children’s book about how I know He’s real came so naturally.”

Her book follows Lilly, an 8-year-old girl struggling to believe in Jesus Christ. Through simple but powerful revelations in her life, Lilly discovers the love of God. Woodford hopes the story will inspire readers of all ages to explore their faith.

“Even if we can’t always see Him or have a hard time believing He is there, we can find comfort knowing He is constant, whole and true,” Woodford said.

TCU’s Role in Her Journey
Woodford attributes her success to the support and inspiration she received at TCU, particularly in her early childhood education courses and the College of Education’s Starpoint Lab School. She said her experiences working with children at Starpoint shaped her understanding of inclusivity and empathy in education.

“I’ve been so moved by the students we’ve worked with. They inspire me to be a better student, daughter, and friend—and eventually, an educator who truly cares,” she said.

Woodford collaborated with Amanda Pretico, a TCU art education major, to bring her vision for How I Know He’s Real to life. Pretico’s vibrant watercolor illustrations reflect the heartfelt story, capturing the beauty of faith and connection.

A Growing Legacy
Woodford’s faith and passion for storytelling don’t end with her first book. She is already planning a series of Lilly Greene books that explore who God is and what He says about His children.

“My goal is to make a series of books that explore God’s love and our purpose,” she said.

With How I Know He’s Real, Woodford hopes to show readers the beauty of faith and the importance of seeing the world through a childlike heart. Her story is a testament to the transformative power of literature, faith and education.
