The University Council for Educational Administration selected Education Leadership doctoral student Ron Rhone as a 2018-2020 Jackson Scholar. The program, named for leader and scholar Dr. Barbara L. Jackson, provides networking, mentoring and professional development opportunities for graduate students of color and focuses on issues of equity and social justice in educational leadership.

“Being selected as a Jackson Scholars is a prestigious honor, and we are proud that Ron is being recognized,” said Erin Atwood, Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership. “He is a thoughtful and dedicated graduate student and school leader with a desire to make a difference in the lives and educational success of his students.”

As a Jackson Scholar, Rhone will receive academic support for research, publication and presentation; an individual mentor; and networking opportunities that continue for program alumni. He will present his paper College Readiness: Perceptions of Students at Early College High Schools in Texas at the 2018 UCEA Convention in November.

Rhone is Assistant Principal at Tarrant County College South Fort Worth ISD Collegiate High School. The inaugural class will graduate at the end of this school year with associate degrees and high school diplomas. He plans to focus his research on student development and identity development at early college high schools and hopes the early collegiate high school trend continues in Texas and nationally.

“I’m constantly thinking about ways to empower students to believe they belong at college,” he said. “We’re on pace to have around 90 percent of our students graduate with their associate degree and high school diploma.”

Rhone said working on his doctorate at TCU has given him a larger perspective on the factors that influence public education and has sparked his interest in educational research. He said he hopes his work while at TCU will help people make decisions about empowering students to take ownership of their education.

In 2016 UCEA named Trevon Jones as the first Jackson Scholar from TCU. Jones is completing his combined MBA and Ed.D. in Educational Leadership program with research focusing on first-generation college students and college access.
