True Stories are Captivating! Using Children's Literature for Social Studies Instruction

Is social studies your least favorite subject? Is it difficult to find time or resources to teach history, geography, and other social studies topics? This session is for you! Designed for elementary teachers, this session will offer attendees conceptual and practical tools for teaching meaningful, integrative, and developmentally appropriate social studies lessons through children’s literature. The session will feature informational texts such as award-winning biographies and picturebooks about historical events.

Make Math Matter: Using Culturally Informed Storytelling to Promote Equity in Mathematics

Day 2, Session 2 - June 1, 1:05 - 2:05pm

This session presents culturally responsive storytelling in mathematics (CRS-M) as an effective strategy to make math appreciated, understood, and enjoyed, particularly for students with reading and mathematics difficulties. Use of stories offers students meaningful learning contexts and connections to their lived experiences, decreases their math anxieties, and improves student outcomes.
