Grief Counseling: From Stages to Stories
Patrick O’Malley, PhD LMFT LPC
Dr. O’Malley will explore the experience of grief from the neurobiological to the spiritual. He will identify key influences from the medical and mental health fields that have shaped cultural beliefs about grief and discuss the self of the therapist and the role of the therapist when counseling those in grief. Finally, Dr. O’Malley will review current schools of grief counseling and therapeutic outcomes and take questions from the attendees.
Patrick O’Malley, PhD has been providing grief counseling and education to clients and colleagues for 40 years. Dr. O’Malley’s essay Getting Grief Right published in the New York Times in 2015 was one of the most read and shared articles in the newspaper’s history. He is the author of a book titled Getting Grief Right: Finding Your Story of Love in the Sorrow of Loss.
