Melody A. Johnson, Ph.D., Scholar-in-Residence, comes with nearly four decades of experience in public education and having served in a variety of district leadership roles. Most of her tenure has involved work in our nation’s urban school systems facing the most challenging of educational issues. In its 125-year history, Johnson was the first female superintendent of the 85,000-student Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD). As superintendent, she established innovative programs and schools such as the Young Women’s & Young Men’s Leadership Academies, Spanish Immersion Schools, the Petroleum Engineering Academy, Early College High Schools, the International Baccalaureate, and the Texas Academy of Biomedical Science, among others. Dr. Johnson also established Gold Seal Programs of Choice in all FWISD high schools, thus creating open enrollment and choice for parents and students.
